Apple AirTags are moving up the list of travel essentials. The $29 coin-shaped gadget makes it easy to track your luggage and other items that might get lost in transit.
AirTags started flying off the shelves after Southwest canceled more than 13,000 flights during the 2022 holiday, leaving passengers stranded — sometimes for days at a time — and separated from their luggage.
The travel debacle turned into a travel nightmare that resulted in a $140 million fine for Southwest and an unexpected sales win for Apple. At the time, Google searches for AirTags increased, and AirTags took two spots on Amazon's best-selling electronics list.
AirTags helped passengers find their luggage when airlines either lost it or said it was in a different location. But they are not only useful for travel.
AirTags help you keep a digital leash on your personal belongings. This means you can use an AirTag to find or track your wallet, backpack, purse and other smaller items, even something larger like a car.
How does an AirTag work? It sends a secure Bluetooth signal to iCloud that can be found by nearby devices on Apple's Find My network (the process is encrypted for added security).
You're the only one who can see your AirTag's location, Apple doesn't store your location or data history, and if an AirTag is near you without your knowledge, a notification will be sent to your iPhone.
Like other Apple devices, the AirTag can also be put into lost mode (a notification will be sent to your iPhone when the lost AirTag is detected).
AirTags are compatible with iPhone (iPhone SE and iPhone 6s or later), iPad and Mac devices. They are water and dust resistant and equipped with a replaceable coin-shaped battery.
AirTag Alternatives for Android Users
Unfortunately, AirTags don't work for Android, but there are alternative GPS trackers for Android users that cost about the same price as an AirTag, such as the Tile Mate, LandAirSea, and the Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag.
Samsung's Smart Tag 2 detects objects within 120 meters of the Galaxy Find My network and can only be used with Galaxy phones running Android 11.0 or higher (2.0GB+ RAM). The SmartThings app is required to use.
Tile has a Bluetooth range of up to 250 feet and is compatible with iOS and Android. Works with Amazon Alexa, Hey Google and Siri (download the Tile app to get started). LandAirSea works for both Apple and Android and requires an app to use.
