Although the studio certainly hopes that many people will appreciate Timothée Chalamet's deep dive into his role as a young Bob Dylan in the upcoming biopic about the folk bard in A complete strangerthe 28-year-old star said he's gotten all the thumbs up he needs.
“Floored,” Chalamet tweeted Thursday morning (Dec. 5) after the oft-understood “Blowin' in the Wind” singer posted a rave review of the actor's work in the film a day earlier. “I'm so grateful,” Chalamet added. “Thanks Bob.”
Dylan released his first official comment on the James Mangold-directed film – due for release on December 25 – on Tuesday, tweeting: “There's a movie about me opening soon called A complete stranger (what a title!),” he wrote. “Timothée Chalamet stars in the title role. Timmy is a brilliant actor so I'm sure he will be completely believable as I am. Or younger me. Or another me. The film is taken from Elijah Wald's Dylan Goes Electric – a book published in 2015. It is a fictionalized account of events from the early 60s leading up to the Newport fiasco. After you see the movie, read the book.”
Chalamet has said he's been honing his performance of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer for years, learning how to play 13 Dylan classics for the film, working with a movement coach, taking a “spirit gathering” road trip in the early years of Minnesota origin. hiking, as well as working with a harmonica coach for five years to nail the singer's signature style.
The film also stars Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Dylan's early girlfriend Sylvie Russo, and Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash.
Earlier this year, director Mangold confirmed that Chalamet would sing himself in the film. “It's an amazing moment in American culture,” the director said at the time. “The story of a young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan who comes to New York with, like, $2 in his pocket and becomes a global sensation within three years — first being embraced by the popular music family in New York and then, of course, kind of outgrowing them at a certain point, as his star rises so beyond belief.”
