Drawing signed music licensing deals with all three major record labels — Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment — as well as “a large number” of indie labels represented by Merlin, according to a blog post. The offers specifically cover DJs streaming live on the platform. other uses of the music are not covered.
Under the agreements, starting this summer, DJs will have to choose a new deal that will apply to all streams on their Twitch channels. A portion of the DJs' earnings on the platform will then be paid to music companies, with the majority of those earnings subject to a 50-50 split between the DJs and Twitch. To help DJs adjust to the change, Twitch says it will offer a one-year subsidy to help make up the difference in revenue paid to music companies, with the subsidy amount gradually decreasing over time.
“It's important for DJs to understand that the status quo on Twitch was unsustainable and any viable future for the community required us to find a solution,” the blog post reads. “We have worked with musical partners over the past few years to develop this program. Without it, those who stream DJ content on Twitch without the necessary rights do so at the risk of receiving DMCA notices and copyright penalties that could limit their ability to stream on Twitch.”
According to Twitch, the number of DJs streaming on the platform has “more than quadrupled” since the beginning of 2020.
