Telemundo Enterprises announced Thursday (April 18) a new structure for its entertainment studios to “strengthen its scripted content,” according to a press release from NBCUniversal's Spanish-language division. The restructuring, which will merge the media company's linear and streaming studios (launching in 2021) into one unit, was revealed by the president of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises Luis Fernandez.
“At a time when Telemundo is the most-watched network in prime time, we charge a lot to produce scripted content under a strong brand: Telemundo Studios,” Fernández said in a statement. “For nearly two decades, Telemundo has been at the forefront of producing Hispanic content created by Hispanics for Hispanics. With this streamlined structure, we are doubling down on our commitment to serve the Latino community with the best script across all platforms for years to come.”
The new structure sees Ronald Day was elevated to President of Entertainment and Chief Content Officer, a role in which he will continue to report directly to Fernández. According to the press release, Day's new role will “expand his responsibilities beyond the network's entertainment programming and unscripted content to include Telemundo Studios.” Previously president of entertainment and content strategy, Day joined Telemundo in 2018 as executive vice president of entertainment for Telemundo Networks, leading the development and production of multiple Telemundo reality shows and live specials, including the Billboard Latin Music Awards.
Additionally, Day was set Javier Pons to lead the combined unit as executive vice president of Telemundo Studios, reporting directly to him. Pons was most recently general manager of Spanish production company Globomedia and head of television at The Mediapro Studio.
“I am excited to lead the newly unified team and continue to drive Telemundo's momentum,” added Day. “We welcome Javier who brings tremendous expertise to this role and will help us leverage our extensive production expertise to continue to be the #1 producer of Spanish-language scripted content in the US.”
