Stephen Malkmus is launching a new band. His new group, after Pavement and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, is called Hard Quartet. The California-born musician is joined in the band by Emmett Kelly, Matt Sweeney and Jim White.
Emmett Kelly is the leader of the Cairo gang. He is also in CIA with Ty and Denée Segall and Double with Jim White. In addition, he has often worked with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Angel Olsen and others.
Matt Sweeney is best known for being on Zwan and Chavez and recently reunited with Bonnie “Prince” Billy for 2021 Superwolves album. Featured on Stephen Malkmus' 2020 solo album, Traditional Techniquesvery.
Drummer Jim White co-founded Dirty Three, who recently shared their comeback album Love changes everything. He is also active with his duo Xylouris White and, in 2024, released his solo album All Achievements: Memories and the Marisa Anderson collaboration Swallowtail.
