Weekend update had SNL'Jane Wickline sings a comedic song as Sabrina Carpenter on Saturday night (December 14) — a song that names pop stars like Taylor Swift and Harry Styles, both of whom the internet has no problem gossiping about it's about sexuality. Carpenter apparently didn't participate in much of that rumor. In the sketch, Wickline depicts the “Taste” singer feeling left out.
“A lot of people on the internet want to start these juicy rumors about whether pop stars are gay, and this is a new song that I, Sabrina Carpenter, wrote called 'When Will One Person Do That About Me?'” SNL The cast member explained before performing a skit based on what Carpenter might think about it all.
Of course, the song sounded nothing like a real Carpenter hit. “I can't look or sound like her. She's totally perfect,” Wickline said, but added, “For the purposes of this song, I'm her.”
“Taylor Swift sings about her love with her best friend/ And you're all crying 'lesbian' because she didn't say 'my boyfriend my best friend,'” she sang in front of a keyboard.
“In a music video, I make out with Jenna Ortega/ Nobody questions me at all when I say this is a metaphor for one of my ex-boyfriends/ And that was it, but nobody ever questioned,” Wickline's Carpenter said. In the next verse she pointed out that the clash with her “Taste” co-star only resulted in online chatter like “I heard that song is about Shawn Mendes.”
“Help me/ Just tell me what I'm doing wrong/ Cause I'm the only straight pop star/ Do they take their word for it?/ It's lonely/ I do gay things and you're not mad/ I want the same treatment/ I want to be mystified/ Why don't you think I'm di or pretend I might be/ I'm not di or pretend but why no one thinks I'm lying/ I just want you to think I might have secrets,” he sang.
Wickline went on to remind everyone that Carpenter also locked lips with a female alien during the MTV Video Music Awards stage in September while performing a medley of her hits.
“I also did an alien girl at the VMAs / Nothing!” she mourned in her song.
Carpenter did not comment on the piece.
Watch “Weekend Update” entertain Carpenter in the clip below. Elsewhere during the Chris Rock-hosted episode, musical guest Gracie Abrams performed “That's So True” and “I Love You, I'm Sorry.”
