Described as his most “intimate and detailed book to date”, The house of hidden meanings offers a “brutally honest, stunningly poignant and deeply intimate” look into the drag icon's life exploring childhood, relationships and identity.
According to the book's description, RuPaul is candid about growing up as a queer black kid in San Diego, California, his “complex relationship” with an absent father and a “temperamental” mother, and finding his identity in the punk scenes and New's drag. York City and Atlanta, battles with self-acceptance and sobriety, and more.
“I'm so excited and so anxious at the same time because I'm revealing so much of myself,” RuPaul said in a video announcing the memoir last year. “This world today feels so hostile and it's such a scary place to be vulnerable. But I did. So get ready.”
The introspective memoir also explores RuPaul's Emmy-winning road to fame Drag Race franchise and music career. The singer, producer and host had his breakthrough hit with “Supermodel (“You Better Work”)” from his debut album, Super Model of the Worldwhich was released in 1993. The dance anthem peaked at No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100.
RuPaul has released 14 albums over the past three decades, including his most recent LP, Black Butta, released last year.
