Verve Records has announced a new album from the late jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove. The album, Grande-Terreattributed to Roy Hargrove's Crisol set, and released on October 18th. Listen to the new track “Priorities” below.
Roy Hargrove's Crisol released only one studio album, Habanaduring the lifetime of the title leaders. It won Hargrove and the band the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Performance.
The award-winning record featured trumpeter and flugelhorn player Hargrove. trombonist Frank Lacy; soprano and tenor saxophonist David Sánchez; alto and soprano saxophonist Gary Bartz; bassist John Benitez; percussionists Miguel “Anga” Díaz and José Luis “Changuito” Quintana; drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernández; guitarist Russell Malone; and pianist Chucho Valdés.
Many of the musicians returned to the studio afterwards Habana to create what is now released as Grande-Terre. Returning players on the new album are: Roy Hargrove, Frank Lacy, Miguel “Anga” Díaz and José Luis “Changuito” Quintana. New additions to the ensemble include: alto saxophonist Sherman Irby; tenor saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart; pianists Gabriel Hernández and Larry Willis; guitarist Ed Cherry; Bassist Gerald Cannon; drummer and singer Julio Barreto. and drummer Willie Jones.
