Questlove has revealed that he will be directing an upcoming Earth, Wind and Fire documentary.
The Roots drummer, who has also been working on a Sly Stone doc, made the announcement on Saturday (September 21) via his Instagram account, noting that the EWF project is slated for 2025 and will be the “defining story » of the iconic R&B group.
“The story of how a band led by a genius from Chicago changed the way we think, our minds and our hearts,” Questlove wrote along with a teaser clip. “Having been baptized in the Afrocentric river of joy of this powerhouse, I've learned about them, I've learned about us, and most importantly, I've learned and rediscovered myself in the process.”
The Grammy and Oscar winning director added: “I am so excited to direct a documentary keeping the positive yet VERY vulnerable and real story of Soul, Self & Struggle. This is a story of joy, perseverance, love, pain, magic and self-discovery. This is Earth, Wind and Fire.”
Questlove's Earth, Wind & Fire document will also include exclusive access to the band's archives of visual, audio and written material, along with approval from the estate of Maurice White and the band, according to a press release (per The Hollywood Reporter).
Earth, Wind & Fire's Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson said in a joint statement: “We are looking forward to this in-depth journey of our band and are so excited to have Questlove direct the documentary.”
With classics like “Shining Star,” “Let's Groove,” “Reasons” and “September,” the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee has reached the top. Bulletin boardHot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart eight times, earned seven top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and sold more than 90 million albums worldwide.
Questlove won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2022 for Summer of Soul (…Or, when the revolution couldn't be televised)which he directed and executive produced.
