32 years after master rocker Prince and Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue teamed up for a collaboration, their previously unheard efforts have reportedly leaked online.
The track, titled 'Baby Doll', has been widely discussed by fans of the Purple One, with its origins dating back to Prince's Australian leg. Diamonds and Pearls tour in April and May 1992. Recorded at Sydney's Studios 301 during his visit to the country, Prince and Minogue reportedly linked up during the former's performance at London's Earl's Court in June of that year.
“We were just hanging out,” Minogue told Zane Lowe in 2020. “I don't even know what that means, but we hung out and it kind of put me on the spot. He was like, “So, where are your lyrics?”
The pair reportedly continued their discussions before Prince sent his driver to Minogue's flat with a tape of his trysts. “There's a tape in my hand of Prince singing, a song called 'Baby Doll,' which I kind of dabbled in, but he was sleeping four hours a night or something and just creating stuff the other 20 hours.” he remembered. “That was almost mine, we didn't record it.”
Ultimately, the track did not receive the full studio treatment due to Minogue's record label rejecting the idea.
The new version of the leaked track arrived on Friday (December 16) via the New Paisley Generation YouTube account and features the same lyrics that Minogue confirmed in 2018 that she wrote for the collaboration.
According to the upload's description, “Baby Doll” was one of the tracks from Prince's Vault planned to be included in a projected project called Diamonds and Love in 2022. This release would include unreleased material recorded during the 1991 sessions Diamonds and Pearls album from 1992 as well Symbol of love record.
A deluxe reissue of the late artist Diamonds and Pearls The album appeared in 2023, but was limited solely to material recorded before the record's original release in October 1991 – eventually excluding the track.
According to a British publication The Suna source explained that “Kylie is just as confused as everyone else as to where the track came from.
“It was originally given to her on a tape in the 90s and after Prince's death in 2016, it belonged to his estate,” they said. “Any leak is annoying, but it's nice for fans to finally know what the mystery song sounds like, god knows they've been waiting so long.
“As for what happens now, fans will have to wait and see.”
