The shortlists for the 2025 Oscars music categories are here. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences named Daniel Blumberg, Bryce Dessner, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Hans Zimmer among the possible nominees for best original score. Reznor and Ross are also nominated for best original song, as are Maren Morris, Pharrell Williams and others. See short-term listings below.
In the Best Original Score category, Reznor and Ross (challengers) and the former frontperson of Yuck Blumberg (The Brutalist) are accompanied by the list of Bryce Dessner of the National (Sing Sing), perennial contenders Danny Elfman (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and Hans Zimmer (Blitz), winner 2023 Volker Bertelmann (Meeting), and others.
Maren Morris and her co-writers are seeking a Best Original Song nomination Wild robot song “Kiss the Sky.” Pharrell Williams made the list for his title track Piece by Piece film. There are also many shortlisted songs from Emilia Perez: Clément Ducol and Camille wrote the song “El Mal” for performers Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón and “Mi Camino” for Selena Gomez.
Along with the music categories, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the shortlist for Best Documentary Feature. The batch includes the documentary by director Gary Hustwit Eno.
The nominees for the 2025 Golden Globe Awards were recently revealed, and there is some overlap with the Academy Awards shortlists. All but one of the nominees for Best Original Score – Motion Picture are on the Oscar shortlist, with the lone being Dune: Part Two. This film was scored by Hans Zimmer, who is being considered instead Blitz.
When it comes to songs, only one Golden Globe nominee isn't on the Academy Awards shortlist, and that's Miley Cyrus, Lykke Li and Andrew Wyatt. Last Showgirl song “Beautiful That Way.”
