Billie Eilish and Finneas won Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” at the 2024 Academy Awards. Eilish and her brother accepted the award in person at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
The other candidates were Barbie“I'm Just Ken” (performed by Ryan Gosling), Flamin' Hot“The Fire Inside” (written by Diane Warren and performed by Becky G), American Accord“It Never Went Away” (written by Semisonic's Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson and performed by Batiste), and Killers of the Flower Moon“Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People),” written by Scott George and performed by the Osage Tribal Singers.
Upon receiving the nomination in January, Eilish and Finneas said: “As lifelong fans of film, film scores and the Academy Awards, this means everything to us.” He thanked “the incomparable Greta Gerwig and Noah Baubach for their genius vision and execution,” Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt “for weaving our song into the fabric and heart of this film,” and Margot Robbie “for her incredible insight as a producer and brilliant performance that resonated so deeply with us.”
In 2023, Best Original Song was won by MM Keeravani and Chandrabose for “Naatu Naatu” from RRR. In 2022, Eilish and Finneas won the award for the James Bond song “No Time to Die”.
