With the new version of ATEEZ's No. 1 single 'Work' poised to make a crossover impact for the K-pop group via an all-English remix featuring G-Eazy, the rapper's lyrics have also sparked fan speculation on internet that he used the track to take a jab at his ex-girlfriend, Halsey.
The 'Part 4' remix of 'Work', which topped June's Global Digital Song Sales for ATEEZ's first number one on the chart, was released on Friday, August 9, with G-Eazy delivering a verse that gets fans talking: “Actin' innocent, no, it's not your first time/We're far away if Libra's her sign/ Ugh, danger, danger (Danger, danger)/Don't be a stranger (Don't be a stranger)/ She said no one can save her.”
This particular line has garnered attention due to Halsey's birthday on September 29, making her a Libra, and has led to widespread speculation that the lyrics could be a thinly veiled reference to his experiences and their past relationship. The stars were in a highly publicized relationship from 2017 to 2018 before a sudden split in July 2018. While neither has spoken directly about what ended their time together, both artists have released music which fans believe is a reference to their breakup. Halsey has also previously mentioned being in an “abusive relationship,” though she has never specifically confirmed whether G-Eazy is involved.
After the collab was released, a user on X (formerly known as Twitter) wrote that it “started out weird when he sings it [because] I immediately remember Halsey… that's the ATEEZ song because you did it for you.” One X user added, “A collab of all things to make a little diss on your ex,” with another saying, “G-Eazy shading Halsey on a K-pop collab… that was NOT on my bingo list AT ALL ».
As some fans have noted, the specific lyrics in G-Eazy's verse stand out against ATEEZ's original message in “Work,” which is about focusing on furthering your goals and being successful. One fan on X wrote: “Talking about the watch and he's here harassing his ex.”
Indeed, the K-pop group sings about the hustle in lyrics like, “I like to party when it's a party/That's what pays me to get up” and its addictive chorus of “Gotta work, gotta work / Gotta get these the money, make a wallet.” G-Eazy later adds, “Work, bend, work, bend, always in the lab/ How I earn checks/ Hundreds of thousands of dollars for a verse, yeah/ I wouldn't lift a finger if it was less” .
The collaboration comes after ATEEZ's established admiration for Halsey. Fans of the K-pop group known as ANTINY know that the members often share musical recommendations: Both Wooyoung and Jongho have shared their love for “Boy With Luv,” her hit collaboration with BTS, Yeosang has suggested Halsey's Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper. hit “Closer” with The Chainsmokers to the fans. Mingy also praised G-Eazy's work, particularly his Hot 100 hit “Me, Myself & I” with Bebe Rexha, and previously recommended Calvin Harris. Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 album, where Halsey appears on two tracks.
Representatives for G-Eazy and ATEEZ did not return calls Bulletin boardhis request for comment at press time.
Even though the potential diss has dominated most of the conversation, it's important to acknowledge ATEEZ's latest hurdle-breaking 2024 steps that include multiple “Work” remixes, called the “Up Next” star on Variety Young Hollywood Impact Report, and on and on [Towards the Light : Will to Power] on the North American arena and stadium tour that just kicked off at New York City's CitiField on Saturday, August 2. This year has also been a big one for G-Eazy with the release of his seventh studio album on June 21, Freak Showmarking his first full-length project in nearly three years, which precedes a world tour that will hit North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand throughout this year and next.
