Happy Lunar New Year! If you're not familiar with Lunar New Year, which begins on February 10, the annual celebration — also known as Chinese New Year — follows the lunar calendar. It contains 354 days, compared to the 365-day Gregorian calendar that you may be more familiar with.
2024 marks the year of the Dragon, which symbolizes strength and good fortune. The Chinese zodiac is divided into 12 astrological signs ruled by different animals such as the tiger, rat, snake, horse, ox, monkey and dragon. The astrological calendar repeats itself every 12 years, which means that there are many people born in years corresponding to the dragon. (Of course, you don't have to be born during a dragon year to get a gift.) In China, where Lunar New Year celebrations can last up to 16 days, the color red represents happiness, success, vitality , beauty and good luck, which is why most Lunar New Year products are red in color.
Chinese New Year must have
To help you prepare, we've put together a list of things to buy for Chinese New Year — consisting of Billboard Senior News Editor, Anna Chan.
See the list below.
- Tangerines/oranges symbolize good luck and wealth.
- Candy (like the ones on Amazon).
- Red envelopes (those dragons on Amazon are perfect for this year, but there are many beautiful options).
- Red clothes symbolizing good fortune/luck.
- Candies include chocolate coins, White Rabbit candies, candied coconut strips, lucky candies (in red foil wrappers) and other sweets.
- Seeds: Sunflower seeds, red watermelon seeds, and pumpkin/melon seeds are Chan's choices.
- Decorations: Red lights (like these, or a whole pack!)
