Guapo: “Self”
New JazzHis interstellar SoundCloud funk. The extreme change of tone of “Free Lil Onion”. Screw tapes. “Flatbed Freestyle.” “Got Me Trippin'” by TisaKorean. Loe Shimmy's dopest songs Zombieland 2. This is the mini-moodboard that comes to mind when I hear “Self” by Guapo. In recent months, Guapo has landed on a groovy sound with lots of vocal effects that feels as modern as it owes to his Houston roots. Here, the high-pitched and low-pitched bites enhance the otherwise basic raps (the credit on the 'Yo' gems came from Temu, though) because of the way they layer on top of each other. If the beat wasn't so laid back, Guapo would sound possessed – and all that vocal melody is done without ever losing the Texas twang.
With artists releasing songs fast and furious, it's hard for the average hip-hop head to keep track of them all — no matter how well-rounded they are. That's why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
