In the live music world, there are those who follow trends, and then there are those who forge their own path. Lila Iké is firmly in the latter category. Born and raised in Jamaica, her musical journey began at a young age, influenced by the soulful tunes that filled her childhood home. “My mom, she's a big music fan,” Iké recalls. “Growing up, my house was always playing music, different genres. It started with me trying to connect with my mother.”
As she grew older, her passion for music deepened, fueled by a desire to express herself authentically. The move to Kingston afforded her the freedom to further explore her musical identity. “The big moment for me was probably moving to Kingston and doing it just from the freedom I had,” he reflects. “When I got to Kingston, I realized it was just an open space… The more I did it, the more people were like, 'Yo, this is really cool.'
Ike's music reflects her Jamaican roots, infused with a modern flair that makes her stand out. “I try to be myself and say exactly what I feel,” he explains. “I have favorite singers and rappers… But I try not to imitate anyone too much. So for me, it's just about being myself and honing my sound as I go.”
Her songs convey empowering messages, address social issues and resonate deeply with listeners. “Music for my house was a huge, comforting thing,” Iké states. “I noticed her [my mother] it comes alive when listening to music… For me, it was very important… that if people don't react like that, then it doesn't make any sense.”
In her creative process, the roots singer prioritizes authenticity and honesty. “I try not to force myself to create,” he says. “Sometimes being an artist … we expect so much from you … But for me, it's about making sure that I really have something that, in my heart, I'm doing this because I want someone else to hear it.”
Collaborations have become an integral part of her emerging journey, allowing her to expand her horizons and connect with artists from diverse backgrounds. “Partnerships open up your sound to different markets and different people,” he points out. “It's networking.”
One of the most exciting collaborations in Lila's career is her recent collaboration with Afrobeat sensation Davido. “This is my first time doing anything in the Afrobeat market,” he enthuses. “It's something I've really tried to get into … Africa is so big and their market is so beautiful … They're opening doors everywhere.”
As she looks ahead to the future, the exciting singer envisions a year full of music, growth and new experiences. “2024 is a blessed year,” he declares confidently. With her unwavering commitment to authenticity and willingness to embrace new challenges, there's no doubt that Lila Iké's star will continue to rise, lighting up the world with her unique blend of reggae and soul.
