Fresh off his album of the year win Michael at the 2024 BET Awards last night (June 30), Killer Mike dropped a new single. “Humble Me” is accompanied by a black and white music video in which the rapper is stripped of his jewelry and handcuffed. Through the lyrics, Killer Mike refers to his arrest at the 2024 Grammy Awards and compares “sitting in a room full of cops” to the biblical story of Daniel in a den of lions. Check it out below.
“Technically, I shouldn't have been here,” Killer Mike said in his acceptance speech for Album of the Year at the BET Awards. “They put me in handcuffs and took me out of this building, but I want to tell you, look god I'm back baby. I'm back and winning. I want to tell black people that because of BET I'm back. No because no white person calls anyone. A Black man runs this business, a Black company did this show and they got my black ass back here. Thank you all.”
Shortly after winning three Grammys, including Best Rap Album, Killer Mike was arrested and booked on a misdemeanor charge after an incident with a security guard. Months later, the Los Angeles City Attorney's office declined to file and prosecute Killer Mike. But Ivor Pine, a spokesman for the city attorney's office, said the musician “successfully completed the Office's hearing process, including the community service requirement imposed.”
Killer Mike is in the middle of a North American tour in support of Michael, his new album and his seventh solo LP overall. He will remain on the road performing his songs live through the fall, including stops at Lollapalooza, the Newport Folk Festival and the Montreal International Jazz Festival.
During his acceptance speech for Album of the Year at the BET Awards, Killer Mike also passionately urged viewers to vote in the upcoming election. “Who we vote for on the big stage is important, but it's more important to know who your city council is, who your district attorney is,” he said. “And if you don't like people running, run your black ass to the polls and run yourself.” Revisit Can Pop Stars Be Political Organizers? on the field.
