John Mulaney is not up to date on TikTok trends.
The comedian is set to host this weekend Saturday Night Live episode with Chappell Roan as the musical guest, and the duo appeared in a new promo released on Thursday (October 31). In the clip, the duo stand side by side SNL cast member Ego Nwodim, who excitedly suggests that the trio can “do the thing.”
When Mulaney expresses confusion, Nwodim references the popular TikTok trend in which a participant says “I hope she does 'Hot to Go!',” in reference to Roan The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess success. However, on trend, usually the scene jokingly cuts to something other than a Roan performance of “Hot to Go!”
Mulaney, still confused, tells Nwodim to “ask” Roan to sing “Hot to Go!”, as she's standing right next to them. “He doesn't get it, girl,” Roan interjects, as she and Nwodim walk away, leaving Mulaney alone.
Saturday's show will mark Roan SNL debut. The singer appeared to tease her next era earlier this month in an Instagram post in which she shared a few selfies and hinted at a follow-up to her debut LP. “Album kinda came out but it's time to welcome a new hot bombshell to the villa,” she captioned the photos, referring to Island of Love phrase welcoming the new contestants that led fans to speculate that she is working on her sophomore project.
