45 years ago, disco mastermind Sylvester performed what would eventually become one of his most famous concerts to date at San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House. The performance became the basis for the 1979 live album Living proofand served as his debut album stars. And soon, fans can hear the Queen of Disco perform in full.
On Wednesday (June 5), Craft Recordings announced its release Live at the Opera, a new live album from the late legend that shares the entire famous concert. Today, fans get an exclusive sneak peak of what to expect with a new live cut of “Body Strong,” the bouncy disco track that Sylvester debuted during the concert with Martha Wash.
The new LP features over an hour of unreleased music from the live concert, including a brief ceremony in which Sylvester receives the key to the city of San Francisco. The physical editions of the new album — available in 3 LP vinyl and 2 CD formats — also come with newly discovered photos from the night, as well as brand new liner notes from biographer Joshua Gamson The Fabulous Sylvester: The Legend, The Music, The Seventies in San Francisco.
“This Sylvester—an androgynous, openly gay, drag-loving, African-American, falsetto-singing, unimaginably fiery man-diva influenced primarily by churchwomen, black blues singers, drag queens, hippies, and homosexuals—would be the central diva in the March 1979 San Francisco War Opera was as unlikely as it was inevitable,” Gamson writes in his new notes. “Except for a few thousand souls, most of us lost it. There was a lot to miss, too: a look at an artist's career before his time, a poignant moment in San Francisco and queer history, a few hours of collective effervescence set to music.”
