“I feel like it ties into the 'Scarlet' story in a way,” Doja said explained on The Therapy Gecko Podcast. “And if you look at his personality traits, who he is and his story, you get the whole relationship. There is an aspect of control. He just abuses his power and his control and is dogmatic and totalitarian.”
Doja released the original version Red in June with the release of “Attention,” which debuted and peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. The accompanying music video — which previewed the era's dominant horror aesthetic — earned six MTV Video Music nominations Awards in 2023, eventually winning Best Art Direction. “Paint the Town Red,” the record's first radio single, soon followed with a catchy hook and a dynamic Dionne Warwick-sampling beat. The song became Doja's second Hot 100 No. 1 — her first unaccompanied — and became the first hip-hop song to top the chart in 2023.
Following behind Scarlet 2 CLAUDE in the poll it is the “other” category, which gathered 14% of the vote. In third place was J. Cole's surprise new project It may be deleted laterwhich garnered 5% of the vote.
