On the back of it SABLE, EP Bon Iver has created a website, Counterpart, that appears to be designed to host covers of his songs. The release comes with a number of new and old Bon Iver songs — including Sam Amidon's cover of “Things Behind Things Behind Things” — along with a video, audio or photo submission link, which will be uploaded at random, according to press release. For the most part, the artists recording the videos are not identified.
The press release notes a series of prompts that inform the mystery project: “Who else could play Bon Iver? Could the essence of a song lie outside the voice that first sang it? If a song is a vessel, who else can fill it? Do you have a friend who looks like Justin Vernon?' He also notes a quote from Justin Vernon's recent New Yorker profile: “Why do we like a song?” he asked. “Is it because he sings it to us? Or maybe it's the song. I just think it's the song. For me it is. For me, it's about the song and what the music does.”
From SABLE, Vernon released videos for “Things Behind Things Behind Things” and “Awards Season.”
