Bad Bunny has released “Una Velita,” an anthem about the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean in 2017. It's his first solo song since last year Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana. Listen below.
The release comes as Puerto Rico prepares to vote in a gubernatorial election on November 5. Bad Bunny, who helped get the vote out, is using the recent seventh anniversary of Hurricane Maria to address the political response to the disaster. As Remezcla notes, the song includes the lyric, in Spanish, “The phoenix they want to hang the country on, one of these days we'll tear it down” — apparently referring to the phoenix emblem of the ruling New Progressive Party.
Earlier this week, Bad Bunny picked up a string of Latin Grammy nominations.
