Puerto Rican reggaetón stars Anuel AA and Justin Quiles took the stage to support Donald Trump during a rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on Friday night (August 30). Both reggaetón stars were called to the podium by Trump, who introduced them as “two amazing music legends from Puerto Rico” and then added: “Every Puerto Rican will vote for Trump.”
Wearing Make America Great Again red baseball caps, Quiles and Anuel took the podium and firmly shook Trump's hand before Anuel took the microphone and introduced himself to a crowd that was clearly unfamiliar with the two Latino artists and was initially restrained in his cheers. .
“Thank you, Mr. President, for having us here,” Anuel said. “For me, it's a real blessing to be here. I'm from Puerto Rico. Since Trump doesn't exist, it's no secret we've been through a lot as a country. Biden always promised, promised. Many politicians have made promises over the years. We all know… the best president the world has ever seen, this country has ever seen, his name is President Trump. So, all my fellow Puerto Ricans, let's stick together. Let's vote for Trump. I spoke with him personally, he wants to help Puerto Rico grow and succeed as a country. He wants to continue helping Latinos in the US. Let's keep doing things the right way and make America great again,” Anuel said, this time to louder cheers.
Quiles then took the podium and added, reading from a sheet of paper: “I will also say a few words. Mr. President, I feel very honored. Mr. President, above all I like you because, I have always said this, you are not a puppet. I support you because I feel you are the most honest president we have ever had. That's true!” Quiles said, looking toward the now more energized crowd as Trump smiled behind him. “Telling things the way they are, not what you think people want to hear, and that's really important. Many Latinos, we stand strong with President Trump. Thank you for sharing there how important it is to rebuild Puerto Rico, and not just Puerto Rico — let's make America great again!”
Quiles and Anuel shook Trump's hand again and walked out to cheers as Trump regained his footing and said, “Wow, that's great.”
Latino artists have been largely silent during the US election campaign, and no major Latino artists had appeared at any rallies until Friday night. Anuel and Quiles' endorsement of Trump is the Republican nominee's most significant endorsement yet. Before the rally, Anuel and Quiles posted videos on their respective Instagram stories of Trump's campaign plane. Quiles also posted a photo of himself wearing a white baseball cap with the words “Make Puerto Rico Great Again.”
